Website hosting in South Africa, explained
Hosting is the rented space your website lives in. For a small business site expect to pay R60 to R250 a month. Where the server physically sits affects how fast your site feels to South African visitors.
What hosting actually is
Three separate things get confused constantly, and it costs people money. Your domain is the address — the thing you type. Your hosting is the land the building sits on. Your website is the building. You can move the building to different land while keeping the same address, which is exactly what happens when you change hosts.
You pay for the domain annually and the hosting monthly or annually, usually to different companies. Knowing which is which is what lets you leave a provider you are unhappy with without losing anything.

Anything more than about R250 a month for a five-page brochure website means you are almost certainly on the wrong plan. That is worth checking on your next invoice.
Does the server need to be in South Africa?
It helps, but less than hosting companies selling local packages imply. The physical distance between the server and the visitor adds latency to every request — a server in Frankfurt is roughly 150 to 200 milliseconds further away from a Cape Town visitor than one in Johannesburg. On a well-built site that is barely perceptible. On a heavy site making sixty requests, it compounds into something you can feel.
In practice a fast site on a CDN with edge locations in Johannesburg and Cape Town will beat a slow site on a local server every time. Build quality matters more than server location, but with both equal, local wins.
The one case where it genuinely matters is data residency — if you are storing personal information and POPIA compliance is a live concern for your business, where the data physically sits becomes a legal question rather than a speed one.

Common questions
Do I have to host with the company that built my site?
No, and you should be suspicious of anyone who says otherwise. Hosting is a commodity. If a provider will not let you move, or holds your files, that is a reason to leave rather than a reason to stay.
What happens if I stop paying for hosting?
Your site goes offline, usually within days. The files are typically retained for a grace period and then deleted. Your domain is separate and survives — you keep the address even if the building is gone.
Is free hosting ever fine?
For a genuinely static site, yes — modern edge platforms host small sites free and very fast. What you cannot do free is run WordPress, and free tiers often will not let you use your own domain, which defeats the point for a business.
