How much does a website cost in South Africa?
A small business website in South Africa costs roughly R1 500 to R6 500 from a freelancer or budget builder, and R15 000 to R40 000 from an agency. An online store starts around R12 000. Those bands are wide because they are measuring billing models, not websites.
Here is what the money actually buys at each level, stated plainly:

The number that matters is not the quote — it is what the site is supposed to earn. A R4 950 site that brings in two extra jobs a month has paid for itself before the first hosting renewal. A R30 000 site that looks beautiful and ranks for nothing has not.
What costs extra, and how much
Everything below is genuinely optional. We quote it up front if your brief needs it, so nothing appears on an invoice you did not agree to.

What is included in every package, regardless of price
- Your domain, in your name. Registered to you, not to us. You can take it and go at any point — see how .co.za domains work.
- Hosting for the first year. Fast South African-relevant hosting that does not go down when your suburb does. More in website hosting in South Africa.
- An SSL certificate. The padlock. Non-negotiable, and free.
- A mobile-first build. Most South African traffic is mobile on metered data. The site is built for that first and the desktop version follows.
- A working enquiry form that emails you, with spam protection.
- Google Business Profile claimed or set up and pointed at the new site.
- The files. If you leave, you take the site with you.
Not sure which package? Count the things you sell. One thing is a one-page site. Two or three is Starter. Four to six services, each worth explaining properly, is Business. More than that, or several towns to cover, is Pro.
Questions about pricing
What is the cheapest website you will build?
R2 950 for the three-page Starter. Below that the honest answer is that you should use a free builder yourself rather than pay someone a token amount to do a rushed job — you will get more from a well-set-up Google Business Profile and a single good page than from a cheap five-page site nobody proofread.
Why are agency quotes R15 000 to R40 000 for the same thing?
Mostly billing model. Agencies quote hourly against a discovery process, several rounds of design concepts, project management and account management. For a large brand that is worth paying for. For a seven-page plumbing or accounting website it is mostly process you are funding rather than output you are receiving. We priced against the output.
Is there anything I have to pay every month?
No. The packages are once-off, and hosting and your domain are covered for the first year. From year two you need hosting and domain renewal, which is roughly R150 to R250 a month depending on the site — you can pay that to us or to anyone else. A care plan from R350 a month is optional and always will be.
What is not included?
Online payments and product catalogues (that is e-commerce, quoted separately), professional photography, logo design, ongoing SEO work, paid advertising management, and any custom functionality that needs to talk to another system. If your brief needs one of those we tell you at quote stage, not halfway through.
Can I upgrade later?
Yes. Going from Starter to Business or Business to Pro after launch costs the difference between the two packages plus R500 for the rework. Adding individual pages later is R450 each.
Do you take a deposit?
Half up front, half on the day the site goes live. If you cancel after the first draft, the deposit covers work done and you owe nothing further.
